TXI's Michael Caldarone Awarded ACI Wason Medal

DALLAS, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Dallas-based TXI (NYSE: TXI) announced that The American Concrete Institute named Texas Industries' Michael Caldarone a co-recipient of their distinguished Wason Medal for Materials Research for a research paper he co-authored entitled "Compression Testing of High Strength Concrete: Latest Technology." The paper, published in the August 1999 issue of Concrete International, examines the elements of conventional concrete testing and renders new, innovative guidelines for the ever-changing industry standards. Caldarone will receive his medal in March at ACI's annual convention in Philadelphia.

With more than 15 years of experience in the industry, Caldarone now serves as general manager of quality assurance/quality control for the concrete division of TXI, a leading supplier of building materials, primarily cement and structural steel. At the time the relevant research was conducted, Caldarone was assistant quality control manager for the Chicago-based Material Service Corporation.

The Wason Medal for Materials Research is just one of the 17 awards the ACI confers on a yearly basis. Founded in 1917 by past ACI president Leonard Wason, the medal is bestowed upon a member of the Institute who has written about original research work on either concrete materials and their uses or on a discovery which has advanced the understanding of materials used in the industry.

Recipients of these awards are chosen by ACI's Board of Directors with the recommendation of an awards committee.

TXI is the largest producer of cement in Texas and a major producer in California. TXI is also the second-largest producer of structural steel beams in North America. The company is a significant supplier of steel bar, aggregate and concrete products and is a leading North American recycling company. TXI shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "TXI".
